Earl E. Bakken Scientific Achievement Award

The first Earl E. Bakken Scientific Award will be presented to Dr. Gerald D. Buckberg at the 36th Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on Tuesday, February 1, 2000. The presentation will be made just preceding the Ralph Alley Lecture in the Tuesday morning Scientific Session.

Dr. Buckberg has been responsible for many milestones and discoveries in the area of myocardial physiology and myocardial protection throughout his 35 years at UCLA Medical Center. His work has been widely accepted and adopted by surgeons worldwide, and has led to a significant improvement in surgical outcomes. Dr. Buckberg is widely recognized as the leading international authority in interoperative myocardial protection. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is pleased to honor Dr. Buckberg for his many and continued scientific achievements with the first Earl E. Bakken Scientific Achievement Award.
