2012 Physician Quality Reporting System Registry Submission

STS News, Spring 2012 -- Since 2008, the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database has been designated by CMS as a qualified registry for the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS, formerly PQRI), providing surgeons with the ability to directly report results to CMS via the STS National Database. This voluntary program enables surgeons to avoid the cumbersome administrative burden associated with claims-based reporting. (If a program has already developed an effective and efficient system using claims data, there is no obligation to switch to STS registry submission.)

The Society is pleased to announce that CMS has again designated the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database as a qualified registry. Effective Jan. 1, 2012, surgeons participating in the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database who have returned a completed Data Sharing Consent and Release Form are eligible to submit 2012 Medicare Fee for Service cases into the web-based, password-protected Quality Module for the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database. STS will submit participant data using the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database with surgical dates of Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2012.

Imperative to successful submission is accurate completion of the following data fields in the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database for each Medicare Fee for Service patient. Measures include:

  • #43, Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG): Use of Internal Mammary Artery (IMA) in Isolated CABG;
  • #44, Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG): Pre-Operative Beta-Blocker in Patients with Isolated CABG; and
  • #45, Perioperative Care: Discontinuation of Prophylactic Antibiotics for Cardiac Procedures.

The Society encourages all STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participants to take advantage of STS Physician Quality Reporting System direct submission for calendar year 2012 by utilizing the Quality Module.

Please note: Programs that have previously completed a Data Sharing Consent and Release Form must complete a 2012 Data Sharing Consent and Release Form in order to submit 2012 Medicare Fee for Service cases into the Quality Module. Surgeons who have signed a Schedule A at more than one facility will need to complete a separate Data Sharing Consent and Release Form for each participating site.
