Fred H. Edwards, MD to Head New STS Research Center
|STS News, Spring 2011 -- At its Jan. 30 meeting in San Diego, the STS Board of Directors decided to launch a new STS Research Center (SRC). The Research Center concept figured prominently in the STS Strategy for Leadership and Change and, as part of implementing that strategic plan, the Society is moving forward to have the SRC up and running by this coming summer.|
Among the first steps to establish the Research Center was the appointment of Fred H. Edwards, MD as its Director. Dr. Edwards, a long-time leader in STS National Database initiatives and current Chair of the STS Workforce on Research Development, is charged with overseeing the establishment of the Research Center and supervising its activities. He will work closely with STS physician leaders to

“The STS National Database is one of the Society’s greatest assets,” said Dr. Edwards. “I’m excited by this opportunity to launch the Research Center and so help drive the Database to an even more prominent and prestigious leadership role in the national clinical research arena.”
The STS National Database and its more than 4.3 million patient records constitute an extraordinarily robust substrate for research. Tapping that unique strength, the Research Center will procure, manage, and coordinate the funding of clinical research grants based on STS data in order to optimize care of cardiothoracic surgery patients. The scientific basis for such grants will be developed through data aggregation and statistical analysis. In addition, the SRC is expected to help provide advanced educational opportunities based on use of STS data and analytic resources.
The Center, which will be based in the STS Chicago headquarters office, will augment rather than replace the Society’s ongoing collaboration with the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Most importantly, it will enhance awareness of STS as a leader in contemporary research and provide objective research data to improve patient care.
