STS Endorses the HEART for Women Act

Beltway Briefings, March 2012 -- Just in time for American Heart Month in February, STS endorsed the Heart Disease Education, Analysis, Research, and Treatment for Women (HEART for Women) Act (S. 438/H.R. 3526) – legislation that was introduced by Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA). The HEART for Women Act takes a multi-pronged approach to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease and stroke in women by:

Ensuring that gender and race-specific information about new medical treatments is available to clinicians, researchers, and the public;
Authorizing the expansion of a screening and evaluation program that helps prevent heart disease and stroke in at-risk women; and
Requiring the Secretary of Health and Human Services to issue annual reports to Congress on the quality of and access to care for women with heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases, and to make recommendations for eliminating disparities and improving the treatment of women.
