A leader in the quality arena, STS is involved in numerous quality initiatives and activities. The Society has developed quality performance measures in the areas of congenital, general thoracic, and adult cardiac surgery. These measures have either been endorsed or are in the process of being considered for endorsement by the National Quality Forum . Many of these measures have also been approved by and included in CMS’s Physician Quality Reporting System (formerly known as PQRI). STS Database participants voluntarily elect to have STS send their data from the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database directly to CMS’s Physician Quality Reporting System, thereby becoming eligible to receive bonus payments.
The STS National Database, designed as a quality improvement tool, offers participants the opportunity to compare their outcomes against the STS national benchmark. Participants can use this information to identify appropriate areas for improvement, and the Society is currently developing resources to assist Database participants in their quality improvement efforts.
In the interests of transparency, the Society has also established STS Public Reporting Online : the publishing on sts.org of CABG composite quality ratings from STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participants who have volunteered to participate. STS initially received consent from 226 database participants to report their information through STS Public Reporting Online.
The Society also advances the health care quality agenda through its members’ service in leadership positions in numerous national organizations.
