STS News, Winter 2012 -- Are you a perfusionist or do you have perfusionists working in your practice? If so, you will want to know about exciting opportunities at the upcoming STS 48th Annual Meeting, Jan. 28-Feb.1, 2012.
The Society expanded its membership categories in 2008 so that all members of the cardiothoracic surgery team might participate as Associate Members, and STS continues to foster that atmosphere of clinical inclusion. The upcoming Annual Meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. will offer several courses of special interest to non-physician attendees – courses that focus on the roles, responsibilities, and coordination of team members, and emphasize how the collective expertise among members of an interdisciplinary team can enhance patient outcomes. This year, perfusionists have an added incentive to attend.
STS is pleased to announce that perfusionists can earn up to a total of 54.2 Category 1 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) during the STS 48th Annual Meeting and STS/AATS Tech-Con 2012. CEUs will also be offered for two stand-alone courses on Saturday – STS/SCA: Intraoperative Echo and Decision Making in Cardiovascular Surgery and STS/AATS/SVS: What’s New in Peripheral Vascular Disease Management.
Kelly Calvert Gustafson, an STS Associate Member and a perfusionist with West Virginia University Hospitals in Morgantown, W.Va., recognizes the value of STS offering perfusion credit. “This meeting is a great opportunity to network and acquire knowledge critical to our practice. The parallel sessions offer diverse educational opportunities beyond what we may see at other perfusion meetings. I encourage perfusionists to attend the 48th Annual Meeting in Fort Lauderdale — and to participate in STS as Associate Members.”
Sessions that will be of special interest to non-physician Associate Members include:
- The Interdisciplinary Team in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, developed under the auspices of the STS
- Workforce on Associate Membership (Monday, Jan. 30);
- STS/AATS Cardiothoracic Critical Care Symposium (Sunday, Jan. 29);
- STS/SCA: Intraoperative Echo and Decision Making in Cardiovascular Surgery (Sunday, Jan. 29);
- STS/AATS/SVS: What’s New in Peripheral Vascular Disease Management (Sunday, Jan. 29); and
- STS Patient Safety Symposium: Teamwork in Cardiothoracic Surgery is More Important than Ever (Monday, Jan. 30).
Registration fees are discounted for STS Associate Members. Visit www.sts.org/annualmeeting for registration information.
