STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database Update on Operative Mortality
As mentioned in the Fall 2011 STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database (CHSD) National Report overview, the STS CHSD Task Force had planned to report Operative Mortality rather than Discharge Mortality beginning with the Spring 2012 National Report. This would mean that sites with greater than 10% of their data either missing or marked as “unknown” for the variable “Status at 30 days after surgery” would be excluded from the mortality analysis in the Spring 2012 National Report. The Task Force now plans to postpone this change until the Fall 2012 National Report which gives sites the opportunity to update and complete their data for submission in the Fall 2012 harvest. Sites that were missing more than 10% of their Operative Mortality data in the Spring 2012 harvest will be contacted directly.
The Data Quality Report (DQR) you will receive during the Fall 2012 harvest will be updated to contain new, detailed information about your operative mortality data. This new information will assist you in determining the completeness of your Operative Mortality data. If you have any questions regarding the change to reporting on Operative Mortality, please contact Donna McDonald, dmcdonald [at] sts [dot] org.
STS Congenital Heart Surgery Quality Module
A new web-based Congenital Quality Module is now available at no cost to all STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database participants. The goal of this module is to facilitate data collection for the 21 Quality Measures for Congenital and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery developed and approved by the STS. These structure, process, and outcome metrics are described in detail in the following manuscript published in the World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery: Quality Measures for Congenital and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
Development of the module was supported by an NIH grant, and it is available to all STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database participants. The module can be accessed through the DCRI web portal. Please contact Carol Elliott, DCRI Data Submission Coordinator (carol [dot] elliott [at] duke [dot] edu), for a username and password.
The module collects both patient and center-specific data, further details regarding data entry can be found in the Data Collection Forms and Data Specifications below; the Resource Guide is available on the web portal.
Participating centers will receive feedback on all of the quality measures benchmarked to national aggregate data as a part of their feedback reports.
The Society strongly encourages all STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database participants to utilize this important data collection tool in order to enhance the quality of patient care.
