Congenital Heart Surgery Database Track
Wednesday, September 26, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Thursday, September 27, 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
These sessions will focus on the Congenital Heart Surgery Database (CHSD), examining how to improve data collection, increase knowledge, and advance the participant’s database abstraction and coding skills in the CHSD. The session will use a case-based learning format. Participation through an audience-response system will be utilized for presentations when applicable.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the CHSD sessions, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the anesthesia section of the CHSD;
- Discuss and code heterotaxy syndrome;
- Define the anatomy and physiology in heterotaxy syndrome;
- Discuss and code congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries;
- Explain the use of the Data Quality Report; and
- Identify the basics of operative mortality.
General Thoracic Surgery Database Track
General Thoracic Surgery Database Track
Thursday, September 27, 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
These sessions will focus on the General Thoracic Surgery Database (GTSD) and examine how to improve data collection and advance participant database coding skills in the upgraded version 2.41 of the GTSD that became effective July 1, 2018. The session will use a case-based learning format. Participation through an audience-response system will be utilized for presentations when applicable.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the GTSD sessions, participants will be able to:
- Explain the staging, diagnoses, and surgical procedures, as well as complication abstraction and coding for lung and esophageal cancer cases;
- Describe how to accurately abstract and code thymus cases;
- Discuss and code gastroesophageal reflux disease;
- Summarize the findings of the 2017 Audit; and
- Identify strategies for data abstraction and coding of GTSD cases.

Adult Cardiac Surgery Database Track
Thursday, September 27, 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Friday, September 28, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (ACSD) sessions will examine how to improve data collection and advance participants’ database coding skills in the ACSD. The sessions will provide information about changes in the scope of cardiothoracic surgery practice. Participation through an audience-response system will be utilized for presentations when applicable.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the ACSD sessions, participants will be able to:
- Describe conditions of the aorta and new aorta data collection elements;
- Explain how to accurately abstract and code mitral valve cases;
- Identify data components of the risk model and discuss risk factors;
- Describe the Maze procedure and guidelines for treatment of atrial fibrillation;
- Summarize how to capture and code the hemodynamics/echo section of the data collection form; and
- Discuss the findings of the 2017 Audit and elements to improve upon.
General Session

Thursday, September 27, 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
The General Session will provide participants with important updates about current and future STS National Database initiatives and essential Database operations information. All registered participants may attend this session.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the General Session, participants will be able to:
- Describe uses of the STS National Database for quality improvement;
- Discuss improvements in data transfer and management; and
- Compare how other organizations capture STS National Database data.
