Patient Blood Management Guideline: A Discussion with the Authors

A new blood management guideline—the first in a decade—focuses on developing multidisciplinary and multimodal strategies centered on optimizing patient outcomes after heart surgery. The guideline was developed by STS and three other medical specialty organizations and offers 23 new or updated recommendations.

In the September episode of the STS webinar series, several of the guideline’s coauthors shared key takeaways, including:

  • Four major tenets of patient blood management
  • Recommendations to reduce periprocedural bleeding and transfusion
  • Potential complications and risks associated with the prophylactic use of plasma in the absence of coagulopathy
  • Making the patient an important part of the decision-making process
