STS National Database News: Intermacs Edition, September/October 2018

September/October 2018

Pre-Order Recordings from the 2018 AQO Meeting
If you weren’t able to attend the recent Advances in Quality & Outcomes: A Data Managers Meeting in Hollywood, you can see photos from the meeting in the Society’s flickr album and experience the exceptional content delivered during the meeting by purchasing AQO Online. Pre-order just the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database sessions (which include an Intermacs session) or a complete set. AQO Online will be available for access in mid-November and—new for 2018—includes the ability to earn CE or CEU credit. Note: Meeting attendees will be given free online access to the sessions for which they were registered. For more information, contact Emily Conrad.

Also, don’t miss this video of STS President Keith S. Naunheim, MD welcoming attendees to AQO. He emphasized how data manager contributions are important to the quality of the STS National Database and highlighted STS resources for data collection.

Sign Up for New Database Mentorship Program
The Society has launched an STS National Database mentorship program that will pair experienced data managers with those who are seeking advice related to data abstraction. After filling out a questionnaire, potential mentors and mentees will be matched based on Database type, experience in specific areas, and other factors. To apply as either a mentor or mentee, please fill out the appropriate form. You will be notified once you have been matched. If you have questions about the program, contact Emily Conrad.

Request STS National Database Data for Research Purposes
Data from the STS National Database, including the Intermacs Database, are available to physicians and researchers for use in quality improvement projects and in comparative effectiveness research, clinical trials, post-market surveillance, and basic and translational research. The Society is accepting applications for the following programs.

Access & Publications (A&P) Program
Research Proposals: Investigators requiring data for publication should submit a Research Proposal. A select number of novel, well-conceived, and hypothesis-driven proposals are approved for STS funding following a highly competitive biannual review process. Investigative teams will work closely with the STS National Database data analytic center, where the data analysis will be performed. The next deadline to submit a Research Proposal for Intermacs data is November 1, 2018.

Minor Data Requests: Submit this type of request if you are seeking data for internal quality improvement or to assist in preparing research proposals—not for presentation or publication. The data generated for a Minor Data Request does not include multivariable modeling or complex statistical analysis. These requests are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Participant User File (PUF) Research Program
This program was designed as a faster, affordable way for investigators to obtain high-quality, national de-identified data from the STS National Database. Data analysis is conducted at your institution, rather than through STS. You’ll receive support from STS Research Center staff, as well as feedback on your proposal, and, later, on your abstract and manuscript. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

If you have questions about either program, contact Kristin Mathis.

Submit Report Confirmations
Quality Assurance and Data Quality Reports for Q2 recently were distributed. If you have any questions, review these FAQs. All Data Quality Report Confirmations should be sent to Maceo Cleggett.
