Higgins Gives Skidmore Commencement Speech
Robert S.D. Higgins, MD, MSHA recently inspired the 2018 graduating class of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, with a speech encouraging graduates to live their lives to the fullest, prioritize their family and loved ones, and lead with action.
The Society’s First Vice President provided advice on overcoming barriers to success. “Define your dream, align those around you with that vision, and motivate them to make it happen no matter what the hurdles or obstacles may be,” Dr. Higgins said. “Never let the challenges you face in life defeat your spirit—remain unconquered through thick and thin.”
He also urged graduates to give back to society, no matter how small the contribution may seem. “We all have valuable assets that may have an incredible impact in someone’s life,” he added.
Dr. Higgins was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws by Skidmore. He is Surgeon-in-Chief of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, as well as the William Stewart Halsted Professor of Surgery and Director of the Department of Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He has been an STS member since 1997.
