STS Summer Series: Early Career Surgeons, COVID-19, and the Future

The Society held an interactive webinar that focused on the opportunities and threats facing early careerists as cardiothoracic surgery begins to emerge from the COVID pandemic. STS President Joseph A. Dearani, MD, and Mara B. Antonoff, MD, talked to colleagues from all areas of the United States and in varying practice situations about how they are coping—both physically and emotionally—and the insights they have on how cardiothoracic surgeons can thrive in the specialty. The webinar explored:

  • Advancing your academic career in a world of virtual meetings
  • Connecting and networking in isolation—finding external mentors, sponsors
  • Balancing professional-personal life with fewer external support services
  • Salaries and financial forecast
  • Physician wellness, resilience, and fortitude
  • Operating room routines and team building with low surgical volume
  • Practice-building strategies, including social media and academics
  • Delayed boards, lower case numbers, and credentialing
