An opportunity for early and mid-career STS surgeon members to learn how to lead in and out of the OR.

The STS Leadership Institute helps members in their first 15 years of practice to develop the skills necessary to lead teams in and out of the OR, strategize personal and professional goals, negotiate a career path, and influence change in the workplace.

The STS Leadership Institute develops skills for cardiothoracic surgeons that have become vital as healthcare delivery grows more complex and rapidly transforms. Physicians who have the necessary leadership skills are essential for medical teams to adapt and work together effectively in order to provide the best patient care. The STS Leadership Institute is targeted for early-career and mid-career surgeons who are STS members (not applicable to current residents and fellow trainees).

It includes five events: three virtual sessions and two in-person meetings. The Capstone event will take place in Los Angeles, CA in conjunction with STS 2025 Annual Meeting. Selected applicants are required to participate in all five events of the series.

A dedicated workforce has implemented a rigorous and realistic course plan for the 2024-25 cohort. The encapsulated courses should guarantee a successful leadership path upon completion of all five activities.
