In an upcoming print issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Robert Sade will present a fictional case about a patient who needs a mitral valve repair and consents to the operation, but refuses to hear any information about his condition, the operation and alternatives, and potential complications. In the article, “A Noninformed Patient Consents to Cardiac Surgery,” the fictional surgeon wonders whether he should do the operation without truly informed consent.
The Annals is seeking brief commentaries to include with the article that discuss the ethical issues of this case. Submit a proposal (2-3 sentences) to write a commentary by July 23, 2019. Selected proposals will be invited to write a full 500-word commentary.
