Joseph Cleveland Jr., MD, has been named the inaugural chairholder of the David A. Fullerton, MD, Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Cleveland plans to carry on the legacy of Dr. Fullerton, former chief of cardiothoracic surgery and STS president, who died in December 2024. Before his passing, Dr. Fullerton and his wife, Christine, created the Fullerton endowed chair to assist with research expenditures, conference participation, and curriculum development with a special focus on mentorship.

Carol Chen, MD, has joined the Stanford Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery faculty as clinical assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery and surgical director of heart transplantation at Stanford Health Care. Dr. Chen earned her medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine and completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship and a transplant surgery fellowship at Stanford.

Brian Mitzman, MD, has been appointed associate professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute, focusing on non-cardiac general thoracic surgery. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Chicago. He currently serves as the medical director of robotic surgery at the University of Utah Health System.

Peter Dahlbert, MD, a thoracic surgeon, joins Cumberland Healthcare. Dr. Dahlberg earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota Medical School and served as a Thoracic Surgery Fellow at Mayor Clinic. His diverse background also includes a fellowship in surgical infectious diseases and a PhD focused on treating severe bacterial infections at the University of Minnesota.

Bradley Taylor, MD, has been named chief of cardiac surgery for the North Region and chief of quality and outcomes for Baptist Health Heart & Vascular Care. He earned his medical degree at Emory University School of Medicine, completed a cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a minimally invasive cardiac surgery fellowship at Onze Lieve Vrouwziekenhu Hospital in Belgium.

Robert Sorabella, MD, has been appointed the surgical director of pediatric heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support at Children’s of Alabama. Dr. Sorabella obtained his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan.

Jack Sun, MD, was named director of cardiovascular surgery at the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute and Hoag Health, Orange County, California. He earned a medical degree from the University of Toronto and completed an advanced fellowship in cardiac surgery at the Harvard University-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Dimitrios Avgerinos, MD, was promoted to deputy director of cardiac surgery at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens, Greece. Previously, Dr Avgerinos was with Weill-Cornell. He obtained his medical degree from Athens Medical School, completed a general surgery residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at New York Presbyterian - Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Noritsugu Naito, MD, has joined New York University Langone Hospital, Brooklyn, as its inaugural chief of cardiac surgery and has been appointed clinical associate professor in the department of cardiothoracic surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He earned his MD and PhD from the University of Tokyo, completed an advanced cardiac surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in structural heart and valve disease surgery at NYU Langone.

FirstHealth of the Carolinas has named William “Cliff” Kitchens, MD, surgical director of the Chest Center of the Carolinas. He earned his medical degree from Emory University, completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Alabama, and conducted his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals.  
 

Hardin

Mark Hardin, MD, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine Department of Surgery. Hardin received his medical degree from UAMS, completed his general surgery residency at the San Antonio Military Medical Center, and completed a research fellowship at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research at the San Antonio Medical Center.
