Sara Pereira, MD, has been named division chief of cardiothoracic surgery and co-director of the Cardiovascular Institute at Indiana University. She earned her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine in 1997, completed her general surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati in 2002, and her cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005. Previously, Dr. Pereira served as an associate professor at the University of Alabama and a professor of surgery at the University of Utah.

John Howington, MD, thoracic surgeon, Franciscan Cardiothoracic Surgery Associates at St. Michael, received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center College of Medicine. He was recently appointed as the acting executive medical director of the Center for Cardiovascular Health for the Pacific Northwest region. And he serves as the 87th President of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Chris Rokkas, MD, was appointed chief of cardiac surgery at St. Peter’s Hospital, an affiliate of St. Peter’s Health Partners. Dr. Rokkas earned both his medical degree and PhD from the National University of Athens, Greece, and completed advanced surgical training at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri; SUNY Medical Center in Syracuse; and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Allison McLarty, MD, was named chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Stony Brook Medicine. In her new role, she will also hold the General Ting Feng Cheng Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery. She completed medical school and general surgery training at Columbia University and conducted her cardiothoracic surgery fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic.

Ryan Davies, M.D., was appointed chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at UT Southwestern and co-director of the Heart Center at Children’s Health. Dr. Davies, who joined UTSW in 2017, earned his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship, general surgery residency, and cardiothoracic surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. He had additional fellowship training in pediatric cardiac surgery at Stanford University Medical Center/Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

Benjamin Wei, MD,  a professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Surgery and the program director of the UAB Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency in the UAB Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Charles W. Breaux, Sr. and Ann K. Breaux Endowed Professorship in Cardiothoracic Surgery. This endowed professorship was established to recognize and support exemplary faculty who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to advancing the field of cardiothoracic surgery through clinical excellence, academic achievement, and service to the institution.

James Barnard, MD, was elevated to chief of cardiac surgery at UMass Memorial Health. He joins the hospital from Manchester University Foundation NHS Trust, Wythenshawe Hospital in the United Kingdom. Dr. Barnard is a graduate of St. Andrews and Manchester Universities in the UK and completed an advanced fellowship as the National Fellow in Heart and Lung Transplantation at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.

Guilherme de Oliveira, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon at SGMC Health, was named assistant professor of surgery at the Mercer University School of Medicine. Originally from Brazil, Dr. Oliveira earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Paraná in Curitiba. He served as a military physician before pursuing advanced surgical training in the US. He completed a general surgery internship at the Mayo Clinic, a residency at the University of North Carolina, and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Utah.
