Now in its fourth year, the Reviewer of the Year award is announced annually to recognize an outstanding peer reviewer for The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. From its inception, the Editorial Board felt highlighting a winner in each of the three main disciplines—Adult Cardiac, General Thoracic, and Congenital Heart Surgery—was warranted, as well as highlighting one trainee/resident award winner. As of this year, we have expanded to include a winner in the field of Perioperative/Critical Care.

In recognition of those who consistently provided a combination of high-quality, thorough, and professional reviews in a timely manner, The Annals named the following outstanding recipients for 2023:

General Thoracic:

Jeffrey B. Velotta, MD, from Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center, Oakland, CA

Adult Cardiac:

Moritz C. Wyler von Ballmoos, MD, from Texas Health Fort Worth, Fort Worth, TX

Congenital:

Karthik V. Ramakrishnan, MD, from Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, Memphis, TN

Perioperative/Critical Care:

Michael C. Grant, MD, from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD

Trainee:

M. Mujeeb Zubair, MD, from the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, MI

Reviewing for The Annals is at once an act of generosity, a responsibility, as well as a privilege, and this year’s winners highlight the tremendous support we receive from our peers in the cardiothoracic surgical community. This important work helps our authors do better studies and write better papers, and we celebrate their efforts in safeguarding the quality and integrity of scholarly communication through peer review. We are thankful for their contributions to our scientific field.
