STS' Journey Towards Inclusion in Cardiothoracic Surgery
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the pursuit of inclusion has become a priority for organizations seeking to address disparities, promote and sustain a sense of belonging, and unleash the talents, beliefs, and power of all their constituents.
Inclusion is not new to STS. It is a stated core value and central to who we are. Over the years, STS has been on a journey to foster a more inclusive environment within the Society and the cardiothoracic surgery specialty. While the journey has been imperfect, we continue to learn, grow, and progress.

STS Past President Joseph E. Bavaria, MD, joined Jefferson Health and Sidney Kimmel Medical College, bringing a wealth of leadership and surgical expertise to the health system’s expanding team as it continues to advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart and vascular conditions.
David Cooke, MD, was appointed interim physician-in-chief for the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and UC Davis Health. He will lead the development and oversight of the center’s performance targets and metrics, setting standards of care, measuring and improving clinical outcomes, and disseminating best practices.
John Karamichalis, MD, PhD, FRCS, was awarded Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He continues to serve as a pediatric cardiac surgeon at Columbia University Medical Center and as the associate program director of the Columbia Integrated (I-6) Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program.
Scott LeMaire, MD, was elevated to associate chief scientific officer at Geisinger and associate dean for research at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. He continues to serve as an adjunct professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.
