As several key physician members of Congress, including cardiothoracic surgeon Rep. Larry Bucshon, MD (R-IN), retire, the influence of STS over Congressional activity is changing. With healthcare facing increasing scrutiny in Washington, the need for strong advocates has never been greater. Through STS-PAC, our political action committee, we are supporting champions of cardiothoracic surgery in battleground districts and helping to elect new physician members of Congress who truly understand the challenges facing our specialty.

As of now, 19 physician members are serving in Congress; five of them are not seeking re-election. Reps. Yadira Caraveo, MD (D-CO), Mariannette Miller-Meeks, MD (R-IA), and Kim Schrier, MD (D-WA), are facing competitive races. These members have strongly supported STS’s priorities, making their continued presence essential. STS-PAC also is investing in five non-incumbent physician candidates to ensure that healthcare professionals are well-represented and can advocate for reforms that benefit surgeons and patients alike.

During this election cycle, STS-PAC has supported more than 100 members of Congress, including physicians and other key lawmakers who prioritize healthcare policies that impact our specialty. These relationships are crucial for advancing STS’s advocacy agenda. By making strategic investments, STS-PAC ensures that cardiothoracic surgeons have strong advocates in Congress who understand and champion our specialty’s needs.
