Summary

Diversity in the physician workforce is a key component of delivering the best care to our increasingly heterogeneous patient population. The experience of Asians in cardiothoracic surgery is not well known. With a paucity of published evidence, the webinar panel will introduce the topic through the lived experience of Asians in the specialty. The discussion will explore:

  • Asian and Pacific Islander identity in society and health care, with a look at historical and current contexts
  • The impact of identity on career choices, workplace interactions, faculty recruitment, and patient outreach
  • Challenges and strategies for improving workplace inclusivity and recognizing bias and stereotypes
  • Resources to increase cultural competency for working alongside Asian providers and patients
