Deep Dive Series

The Society’s new Deep Dive Series encourages viewers to explore single topics in cardiothoracic surgery on a more in-depth level than our 8 in 8 microlearning series.

STS invites viewers to provide feedback, submit topics and ask questions. Please email education@sts.org.

Deep Dive Series: Critical Care

Post-Cardiotomy ECMO Support
This video explores post-cardiotomy ECMO support for patients who have undergone a conventional cardiac operation and are unable to wean from cardiopulmonary bypass. Topics include cannulation configurations for venovenous and venoarterial ECMO, left ventricular venting, troubleshooting failure to wean, and flow optimization.

Initiation of VV ECMO for COVID Patients
The coronavirus pandemic has led to a resurgence in use of veno-venous (VV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ECMO therapy has become a salvage treatment when other therapies have failed. In this deep dive, you’ll hear of about emerging criteria, indications, and strategies for VV ECMO use in COVID patients.

Perioperative Care of the Aortic Surgical Patient
Part 1—Proximal Aorta & Dissection

In this two-part series highlighting the perioperative management of aortic surgery, fundamentals and pitfalls are identified.

In Part 1, the focus is on aortic dissection and proximal aortic and arch surgery with hemodynamic considerations and optimal neurologic outcomes.

In Part 2, the focus is on thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm surgery with an emphasis on managing its unique challenges and reducing the risk of spinal cord ischemia in the postoperative period.
